Vexation of the World

by Doyle Carter (Tulsa, Oklahoma)

Do you feel vexed or disrupted by the news every night at 6pm? Does the world around you make you angry due to it's corrupt ways? There are times when you can feel helpless as you watch events, whether world or local, that go on around you. But we do have hope in God and deliverance from trials.

In 2 Peter 2:5-9, Peter wrote, “And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bring in the flood upon the world of the ungodly… and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ash... an example unto those that after should live ungodly; and delivering just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds.)”

Peter understood that the world around us with its disobedient attitude toward the correct way of life that God presents us with, would cause us anguish. We are surrounded by the evil in this world without any justice to correct it. Or so it seems.

But in verse 9, Peter reassures us by saying, “The Lord Knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and reserve the unjust unto the Day of Judgment to be punished.”

Yes, as the examples of Lot and Noah show us, God can deliver us from this world of evil and punish the unjust on the Day of Judgment, but we must endure until the end just as Noah had to wait until it rained before he was delivered and Lot had to wait until the angels came to witness the evil of Sodom and Gomorrah.

Remember what Jesus said in Matthew 24:13, “But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.”

So we are to be like Lot and Noah enduring the events around us and being strong in the Lord God. We are not to give up when people or events in this society of great evil continue to vex our soul “day to day”; for God is just and will deliver his people when it is time and will reserve the unjust for their time of punishment.

So I encourage you to be strong in the Lord God and look forward for the day that Jesus Christ will come to correct the problems of this world.
