Do You Really Believe in the Bible?
by Clyde Ferrell, Jr. (Mount Calm, Texas)
Just what does it mean to believe in something? To believe, is to accept that (something) is true or (someone) is telling the truth. (To believe in) have faith in truth or existence of. The character word in believe is the word truth. Therefore, when one says they really believe in the Bible they are saying they believe in it’s truth. Now since the truth is found in the words of that book in written scriptures it is logical to say you believe in the Bible because of what it has to say. Correct?
Let us go a step further and say, “I believe in Jesus”. What does that mean? Does that mean you believe in the flesh, bone, and body of Christ and that is it? Or does it mean you believe not only in that, but what He taught and what He did for humanity?
The point is, when you say you believe in something, there is more to it than meets the eye. The Bible says, “The demons believe and tremble” (James 2: 19). To believe is to take action and to do and be a part of what you profess you believe in. To say I believe in the bible and it’s Christ is a shallow belief, if you don’t do and practice what is taught in the book.
Do most professing Christian churches in our world today, practice the teachings of the Christ of the bible, or do they practice the European, Catholic, Protestant concepts of the council of Nicea of Rome? History bears much of the truth concerning our so called Christian churches of today. The insertion of Roman paganism into the fray leaves many questions as to the truths of modern day Christianity from why worship on Sunday, to why celebrate pagan festivals such as Easter and Christmas?
In traditional Christianity today, one has to define who’s truth is being followed. It is obvious it is not the Biblical Truth’s that modern day churchanity adheres to as symbolism and ritualism have replaced forgiveness, repentance and life style change. Pagan truth or Bible truth, does anyone really care?
In America we are the land of many religions. There is not a religion that exists that we don’t have bits and pieces of. In our mixing pots of churches, as far as the bible goes, we do everything we can to discredit what it says. For example: I’ve had discussions with some of my friends about the biblical laws of clean and unclean meats. To them these laws are old fashioned and not for us today. (Leviticus 11)
Many churches today teach that the Ten Commandments are not necessary for us to follow, they are old laws that don’t apply to us. If the Ten Commandments were so bad for mankind, why are they considered to be the backbone of the Old Testament? Today they are considered the limp bone of the New Testament. Hello! The Old Testament is the foundation upon which the New Testament is built. It’s the only revealed printed word that the New Testament Church had.
Granted, Christ did change some things, but He did not do away with the definition of sin. (1 John 3:4) “Sin is the transgression of the law” (God’s law) He did away with sacrificial law and the penalty of breaking the law, eternal death. He sacrificed His life for those who would truly believe in Him.
Most of today’s clergy teach a 1st day of the week worship day, not a 7th day Sabbath. What does the 4th commandment say? Do we forget that it says, “Remember the Sabbath day”. Why do we overlook scriptures like Matthew 5:17-18, where it says, “Not one jot or one tittle will pass from the law until all is full filled, until heaven and earth pass away.”?? Do we really believe the Bible?
I know people who say they are Christian and yet forgiveness is not a quality that appeals to their so called Christian way of life, moreover a grudge is more appealing than love. Even Christ made reference to the attitude of false Christianity when He said, “Why do you call me Lord, Lord when you don’t do the things I say”? (Luke 6:46)
Then again, maybe it’s just me and I have a wrong understanding of what a Christian should be. I do know this, none of us are perfect, but if we say we are Christian we should live by what the book says, not by what tradition teaches us. “Do you really believe the Bible.”? If you do, then do what It says.
