Disruption of Sabbath Services (11-19-06)
by Darwin & Laura Lee (Bismarck, North Dakota)
Our Sabbath Services were delayed yesterday (11-18-06) as Arlan Weight stopped in yesterday. He came with no remorse for the havoc he has reeked over here in this small group. He came in still trying to justify his own actions as appropriate. He came in telling us that he would forget everything if we would forget everything, claiming this would be forgiveness and reconciliation. We tried to make it clear to him that there were several problems that needed to be worked out between us before true reconciliation could take place.
In order for any true reconciliation to take place there has to be an admission of wrong doing and a promise (repentance) to at least try very hard not to continue to do the same thing in the future. Arlan doesn't want to do either of those at this point.
He also accused us of forcing him into the meeting we had with him at Perkins Restaurant on January 2, 2006. Let the record show that Arlan was asked for approximately 1 and a half months before that meeting to set it up on his own and he would not meet with us according to Matthew 18:15. Arlan also knew far in advance that we would bring a witness and ask to meet with him, which we did on January 2, 2006. We brought a tape recorder as a witness. We went to his door and knocked and when he answered we told him we wanted to meet with him. He had a choice at that point whether he would meet with us or not. At that time he said he would meet with us at Perkins Restaurant. Not only did he choose the place of the meeting but he also came to the meeting in his own truck. We had only gone to Arlan's house that night of January 2, 2006 to see if he would meet with us, as according to Matthew 18:16. He is the one who chose the place and that he would go. Now as of yesterday he is accusing us of having forced him to meet with us that day. Arlan also knew very long in advance that we would make public the matter according to Matthew 18:17 if he did not want to work on the problems which occurred due to his actions toward us.
We tried to explain to Arlan when he came that unless these underlying problems between us are resolved to everyone's satisfaction that no true reconciliation can take place between us. His response was "What do you want? Blood?" Our response was that we would like to see some remorse coming from him. Some sorrow for the things he has done to us. His attitude and words were that he doesn't believe he has done anything wrong to us. We said that if you don't think you have done anything wrong and we just forget the whole matter and pretend none of it ever happened, then the next time a problem arises within our Sabbath group, the same stuff will occur as it was never resolved.
We explained to Arlan that we have proof in his own hand writing and on tape in his own words that not only did he lie to us on several occasions, but he also sought revenge on us and actually carried it out.
It has been over a year since Arlan last came here for Sabbath Services and our Sabbath Services were greatly upset when he came here displaying the same attitude and words that he used in January when we met with him at Perkins Restaurant face to face. He seems very much not to have any regrets, remorse or sorrow over anything he has done to us or others in the course of this whole mess. We totally regret that Arlan continues down this road to destruction, but he is not going to be allowed to come in here and disrupt our Sabbath Services even one more time in the future. We hope we were able to make it very clear to him that he needs to set up a meeting with us outside of Sabbath Services to resolve these problems between us or he will not be allowed to come back in here. We are not disfellowshipping Arlan, we do however have to try to allow those who do come here on the Sabbath to be able to worship in peace and we just can't do that if Arlan is going to come in here on the Sabbath and create even more problems.
We sincerely hope and pray that as Arlan reads this he will either feel a need to resolve these problems that exist between us and will set up a meeting or meetings with us to start working on resolving these problems between us or if he does not want to do that, that he will at the least honor our request for him not to show up for Sabbath Services with us until such time that he does meet with us to work on resolving these problems. Let the record show that it is totally Arlan's choice whether he will work toward reconciliation with us or not. Let the record also show that when this reconciliation process starts that we will post it here also. Let the record also show that we did not want any of this to become public knowledge, but in carrying through from Matthew 18:15-17 the principle is to let the church know when a brother does not want to work toward problem resolution involving sin, which would result in true reconciliation.
