A New Agricultural Revolution!
by Jeffrey Caldwell (Redwood City, California)
I've just now viewed a marvelous and very
hopeful short movie with an introduction by Charlie Sheen! It's called "The Greening of Eritrea: Seawater Brings Hope to Africa's
Coast".
Eritrea is the newest African nation, founded in 1992; the local Eritrean club meets in my landlord's garage here. The
focus of the film is a clever project using seawater for the culture of shrimp and fish, then sending the water enriched by their
wastes to fields of pickle weed and mangroves, using them for small animal fodder, building materials and fuel, while at the same
time building new agricultural soil, improving the local microclimate and providing work for hundreds of people in the pilot project.
These techniques offer hope for 25,000 miles of arid coastlands around the world!
